Oil Products Tanker Charter

Oil products tankers carry refined petroleum products from refineries and terminals to the markets that use them.

What they carry

Gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and other clean products, and fuel oil and other heavier products. Clean and heavier products are not mixed on the same tanks without cleaning, so say which one you ship.

Sizes

Product tankers range from small coastal ships to medium and large range ships. The right size depends on your parcel, the ports and the draft they allow.

How it is chartered

Most cargoes are fixed on a voyage charter with freight per tonne or a lump sum, and a laycan. A time charter suits a regular flow.

Sizes and trades

Refined products travel on Handysize tankers of about 10,000 to 40,000 DWT, MR tankers of about 25,000 to 55,000 DWT and the larger LR1 and LR2 tankers of about 55,000 to 120,000 DWT. Large refineries in the Middle East and India export diesel and jet fuel to Europe and Africa, and refineries in the United States export products to Latin America and Europe. Many cargoes are split in parcels for several buyers.

Quality of the cargo

Refined products have tight specifications, so the tanks must be clean and free of water. An independent inspector checks the quality and the quantity at loading and at discharge, and the contract names the standard. Say in your request which product, which grade and how it must be inspected.
