Vessel Charter by Ship Type
Pick the type of ship your cargo needs. Each guide explains what the ship carries, how it is chartered and what to prepare before you post a request.
Bulk Carriers
- Dry Bulk CharterBulk carriers move most of the world's loose dry cargo: grain, coal, ores, fertilizers, cement and more. Here is how a dry bulk charter works and what to have ready.
- Cement CarrierCement carriers are built to carry bulk cement and similar powders dry and to discharge them with air, so the cargo reaches the silo without being handled by hand.
Dry Cargo
- General Cargo CharterGeneral cargo ships carry packaged, bagged, palletised and breakbulk cargo, often with their own cranes. They suit cargoes that do not fit a bulk carrier.
- Deck Cargo ShipDeck cargo ships have a large open deck for cargo that is too long, wide or awkward to fit inside the holds of an ordinary ship.
- Reefer CharterRefrigerated cargo ships, known as reefers, carry perishable cargo that must stay at a set temperature for the whole voyage.
- Livestock CarrierLivestock carriers are ships fitted to carry live animals, with ventilated pens, feed and water systems and crew trained to look after the animals on the voyage.
- Heavy Lift CharterHeavy load carriers move cargo that is too heavy or too large for an ordinary ship: transformers, machinery, vessels, large steel structures and other project cargo.
Tankers
- Tanker CharterTankers carry liquid cargo in bulk. This guide covers the tanker types you can request and how a tanker charter is normally set up.
- LPG Tanker CharterLPG tankers carry liquefied petroleum gases such as propane and butane. They are sized by cargo tank capacity, so a request for an LPG tanker is described in cubic metres.
- LNG Tanker CharterLNG tankers carry natural gas cooled to a liquid. They are sized by cargo tank capacity, so a request for an LNG tanker is described in cubic metres.
- Chemical Tanker CharterChemical tankers carry liquid chemicals in tanks that are coated or made of stainless steel, so the tank type must suit the cargo.
- Chemical/Oil Products TankerChemical/oil products tankers are flexible ships: they carry clean petroleum products and also many chemicals, which is why they are in wide demand.
- Vegetable Oil TankerVegetable oil tankers carry food-grade liquids, so tank cleanliness and the previous cargo matter as much as the size of the ship.
- Crude Oil TankerCrude oil tankers carry crude oil, and often heavier dirty products such as fuel oil, from producing regions to refineries.
- Oil Products TankerOil products tankers carry refined petroleum products from refineries and terminals to the markets that use them.
- Bitumen TankerBitumen tankers carry bitumen and asphalt, which must be kept hot to stay liquid, so they have special heating systems in the tanks.
